the Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

Author: Michelle Hadkin

Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult, and Romance

Cover Rating: 4/5

Aesthetically, I thought this cover was beautiful. I loved the underwater aspect, it was almost as if she was drowning in all of her hardships and life and she needs saving. Though I didn’t feel like it tied into the book as well as it could of. It would have gotten a 5 if it would have tied into the novel well and been as beautiful as it is!

Goodreads Summary:

Mara Dyer believes life can’t get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.

It can.

She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her strangely unharmed.

There is.

She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.

She’s wrong.

Spoiler free Summary:

This book has been in my Goodreads want to read section since I was in high school. I am now graduated from college… ya it has been there for awhile. I never actually read it back them because from the description I thought that it didn’t sound much like something that I would typically read. Though I was recently on Book Outlet buying books, as I usually am, and saw it and it was cheap and heck I put it in my cart. Then yesterday everyone on twitter made the decision for me, it was finally time to read it. I finished it in about 12 hours (counting sleeping)!

The book starts off a bit slow because it is just the main character, Mara, waking up in a hospital bed and not knowing how she got there. It is mostly explanations and introductions in the beginning. Things start to spice up when she moves to a new town and starts at a new school. First she meets Jamie, a sweet and somewhat nerdy guuy a bit on the short side. She likes him because he does not adhere to the societal standards that the other students have set at this private school. She has been through much trauma and doesn’t want to be around any pretty bichachos. Thing start to look up for her. Then she meets Noah, the school’s bad boy, he is everything she shouldn’t want but does. Things start to get super good at this point, I couldn’t put my book until I finished at this point. you will have to pick it up to find out what happens next!

This book was suspenseful, mysterious, and wonderful. It was the book that I didn’t know that I needed to read. DO NOT JUDGE BY BOOK BY DESCRIPTION. For years I didn’t read this because I thought that the description didn’t sound much like a book that I would typically read. Man was I wrong! This was exactly my cup of tea. I would definitely suggest this to any lovers of paranormal and mysterious reads. This book will draw you in with the mystery and you won’t want to put it down until the very last word!

I already ordered the next two books in the series. I will have the reviews of them up as soon as I can! Michelle Hadkins is an amazing writer and I am definitely going to read everything by her. Go read this book!

Wonder Woman Spoiler Free Review

Author: Leigh Bardugo

Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult, Comics/Superheroes

Cover Rating: 5/5

ww cover

I loved everything about this cover! The first thing that I noticed when I looked at this cover was that her wrists and the star on her forehead were shining. I love that this detail was accentuated because those two things are a big part in the actual book. Then the water and the cliffs were in the background and were obviously meant to be themyscera. It really helped to see this on the cover for people who have never seen the movie and don’t realize what themyscera looks like. Then the last thing I loved was that it had the wonder woman logo that took up a large portion of the book and the colors made it look awesome! Whoever designed this cover art was a mastermind!

Goodreads Summary:

Daughter of immortals.

But when the opportunity finally comes, she throws away her chance at glory and breaks Amazon law—risking exile—to save a mortal. Diana will soon learn that she has rescued no ordinary girl, and that with this single brave act, she may have doomed the world.

Spoiler Free Review:

As everyone knows, wonder woman is a very hot topic right now. This is because this year the wonder woman movie was released. if you saw it, you know that it is awesome! If you haven’t seen it, I would suggest going and watching it immediately. The movie is actually one of the reasons that I really wanted to read this book. I wonder if Leigh Bardugo planned it coming out a couple months after the movie on purpose?

The book was book mostly started off with introductions to the wonder woman, who is know by her true name Diana in this book, and an explanation of what themyscera is. One of my complaints was that I thought that the introductory was a bit long. I mean I get that it had to have somewhat of an introductory, but you don’t get to the juicy part of the book until about page 75. I mean for a book that is only about 380 pages. Though once they get to New York the action really starts to kick in. I loved how many different scenes you got to see Diana kick butt.

Once we got to the exciting part of the book I thoroughly enjoyed Leigh’s writing. It was fast enough paced and had some really good action scenes, especially considering that it is about wonder woman. I thought that the idea of a warbringer, someone who will bring war when they turn 17 unless brought to a special spring. I thought that that was a very unique idea that made an awesome plot line.

One thing that I truly loved about the book was that Diana in the book and movie were so similar! I think that this was truly dedicated to the amount of time that Leigh Bardugo spent studying the wonder woman comics and other sources. I think that this is the key for an author to have an amazing book. It is especially important when the topic of the book is something that has already been written about and been around for a long time. Though it is truly amazing that the mannerisms and characteristics of Diana seemed to translate from the movie to the book. i truly enjoyed that fact because after the movie I had a picture of what Diana is like and Leigh seemed to stay true to that picture even though I am sure she finished this book before the movie came out.

The Leigh knew what i love and threw in my favorite thing, A PLOT TWIST. I love when authors are able to surprise and throw me off my feet with the plot twist they have. typically I am able to guess what the outcome of the book is going to be, but I didn’t see this one coming. I thoroughly enjoyed that the ride that Leigh took her readers in throughout this book.

Overall, I thought this was a very well written and delightful book to read. I have quenched my wonder woman need for the time being. I am now even more excited for the justice league movie to come out! I would suggest any comic book lover to read this or someone who loves strong woman characters. There are only a couple things that I thought were not necessary or could have been changed, but overall I was thoroughly impressed. Nice job Leigh!

Jurassic Park Movie VS Book

jurassic-park-3.jpg

I know what you guys are thinking, the book is always better than the movie hands down in any situation. I mean especially when you take into account adaptation such as The Mortal Instruments, The Fault in Our Stars, and 13 Reasons Why. They usually never turn out nearly as good as the book because it is hard for the writers of movies/shows to fit all the information into the movie that was in a 300-700 page book. But occasionally you will find that one needle in the haystack, where the movie actually amazes you.

I have loved Jurassic Park since I was little, I even own a shirt from hot topic. I have seen this movie more times than I can count. i found out a couple years ago that it was a book, but I never actively searched for the book. I just figured that the book would be too different from the movie and I wouldn’t like it because I love the movie so much. Then, when I was at Goodwill the other day I spotted this book and decided that it was finally time for me to pick this book up.

I started reading and I have to say Michael Crichton did a TON of research for this book. There was a ton of facts about dinosaurs, well researched facts. Then there was the character Malcom, who was a mathematician, so there were many terms and theories that were used. these terms were also not basic ones you use everyday. I can tell that this was very well thought out. I am sure that this author is very good at researching things like this since he went to medical school at Harvard. Even I could never have the memory for any scientific facts very well. So I really enjoyed the fact that you can tell that the author was very invested into making this novel. Though since there are so many facts, graphs, etc. it took a bit longer to get through the book than it would for something such as harry potter.

I was very glad to notice, the further I got into the book, that the movie was so similar to the book. I think they had almost everything, if not everything, in the movie that was in the book. This pleased me since I am such a lover of the movie, it was a totally new experience to enjoy the movie through this perspective. I have a feeling that the author was a very large part in the making of this movie, because typically the author’s don’t get much say and the movie gets a bit strayed from the original plot line or how the characters are supposed to be.

I think that a reason that I am so interested in the movie and book is because I was somewhat of a dinosaur addict as a child. Learning about them in school was on of my favorite things and I knew all the different kinds. I mean if you quizzed me today I don’t think I would know much anymore since i haven’t studied them in the last 10 years. The subject is just very fascinating. i love that the author included things about their nesting and how they would act in the world today, especially around humans.

If you haven’t seen the movie, what have you been doing with your life? Go watch it! Then if you have seen it, I would definitely suggest picking up the book, it was a very good read!

Tower of Dawn Spoiler Free Review

Author: Sarah J Maas

Genre: Fantasy, New Adult

Cover Rating: 2.5/5

This cover wasn’t horrible or anything. The only reason that I am rating it so low is because I don’t like that it does not go with the other books in the series. I mean I get that the novel was about Chaol, so it couldn’t have Aelin on the front like the past books. Though I felt like she could have adjusted it to Chaol better by maybe putting him on the front. I’m just salty that the series won’t be as aesthetically appealing when put together on my shelf. I also didn’t like how similar it looked to one of the Game of Thrones books.

Here is the Game of Thrones cover:

Screen Shot 2017-09-14 at 4.36.53 PM

Amazon Summary:

In the next installment of the New York Times bestselling Throne of Glass series, follow Chaol on his sweeping journey to a distant empire.

Chaol Westfall has always defined himself by his unwavering loyalty, his strength, and his position as the Captain of the Guard. But all of that has changed since the glass castle shattered, since his men were slaughtered, since the King of Adarlan spared him from a killing blow, but left his body broken.

His only shot at recovery lies with the legendary healers of the Torre Cesme in Antica–the stronghold of the southern continent’s mighty empire. And with war looming over Dorian and Aelin back home, their survival might lie with Chaol and Nesryn convincing its rulers to ally with them.

But what they discover in Antica will change them both–and be more vital to saving Erilea than they could have imagined.

Spoiler Free Review:

I started this book not expecting much because Chaol was the main character. I mean Chaol is what I would call a background character. He was slightly prominent in the first two books, but after that he was kind of just floating in the background because he was done with Aelin for the moment. So I was honestly wondering how Sarah J Maas was going to get a whole novel just about Chaol nursing his injury. Then when I knew Nesryn was in it I started thinking that they will probably end up together since they got a little close in the last book.

Then as usual Sarah J Maas blows my mind! She is literally queen of writing fantasy books. I knew, I just knew that as soon as I saw the narrative for a new character that she was battering up to throw a curve ball at us. She is just so good at it! Then she makes you fall in love with more characters, just when you thought you had enough. I mean this girl has a mind like no other, she has characters coming out of the ying yang.

I loved how she included things in Chaol’s narrative such as the struggle that one has to go through in a wheel chair. The constant judging and people feeling sorry for them. I thought that this was a key detail, especially for someone who, for most of their life, could walk on their legs. I somewhat know what this feels like because when I was 14 I broke my leg and had to be in a wheel chair for two months straight. At least I could still use one leg. It is very hard for someone to become dependent upon others. She pulled at my heart strings when Chaol was struggling through things like this.

Then when Yrene, the new healer, was thinking about not helping Chaol, I was thinking no no no no. At this point she already pulled me in and I knew I was ready for this ride. She was on a steady track of blowing my mind. I honestly amazes me at how long her books are, but the next thing you know, you are finishing the book!

I loved how many twists and turns that we had to go through with both Chaol and Nesryn in this book. Then Sarah threw some things in there that you would never see coming! At one point towards the end there was a detail where I literally slammed down my book because I was so surprised! You have to read it to know!

Overall I think that Sarah did an AMAZING job of turning something as simple as Chaol, a menorahs character, into something amazing that sucks readers in. I never expected to enjoy this novel and I honestly loved it so much!! I need people to converse with me about it and talk about the feels!! Please feel free to message me on Twitter or Instagram to talk about the book 🙂

If you want a book to blow your mind and take you through twists and turns, please go pick up Tower of Dawn now!

I will not include a spoiler section since this book is so new and I don’t want to ruin it for anyone!

Goodwill Book Haul!

So the other day I went to the downtown Seattle goodwill, which is the best one in Washington. I headed straight for the book section and was able to find 7 awesome books! Many of these are books that I had been wanting for awhile anyways. So here we go.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Surprisingly I have never read this book. I saw the movie last year and ever since I have been wanting, no needing to read this book. When I saw it I immediately snatched it! I am so excited to finally read this book and talk to everyone about it!

2. If I Stay by Gayle Forman

This book was made into a movie about a year or two ago. I have never read or seen it. It seems like a book that is going to make me cry like The Fault in Our Stars. So I feel like I have to wait for the perfect cry worthy day to read this one.

3. Looking for Alaska by John Green

If you guys haven’t guessed I read more fantasy and sci fi than contemporary. I mean I will pick up a contemporary read every once in awhile if I have heard good things about the book. I have read both TFIOS and Paper Towns. I have heard many people say Looking for Alaska is one of his best books, so I feel like I should probably read it.

4. The Young Elites by Marie Lu

I have actually never read anything by Marie Lu, but have heard tremendous things about her writing from other book bloggers and booktubers. I also have heard recently by many people that they really liked this book. Since this was the case when I saw it I felt that I should pick it up for my TBR pile.

5. Legend by Marie Lu

This is a book that my parents and sister listened to on an audio book when we were in the car. I didn’t listen to it though because I prefer regular books over audio books. Though they told me how much they enjoyed it, so I have been wanting to read it for awhile. When I saw it I knew the time has come to grown my TBR even more!

6. Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton

I am an avid lover of the movie, have been since was a kid. I even own a Jurassic park shirt, bonus points if you know which youtube video I was caught wearing it in.Many people have told me that I should read this since I love the movies. I have heard that the book is supposed to be even better. When I saw it I was so excited!

7. The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan

If you don’t know me, I love Rick Riordan! I have read all of the Percy Jackson books, half of the Heroes of Olympus (own all of them), own the first Magnus Chase, and own the first book in his most recent series. I also have been wanting to read this one because I love learning about Egyptians and their gods. I find it so interesting. I was very excited to find this book.

That is all the books that I found. Goodwill is one of my favorite places to look because they usually have some pretty good books and awesome prices! All of these books were $2.99 or under! If you have a Goodwill near you I would definitely suggest going and looking.

Free Kindle Books!

So as many of you know one of the most popular ways to read books, besides the traditional way, is to get an e-book version. Most people tend to sway towards kindles to read their electronic books, like I personally do. One of my favorite things about getting kindle books is that so many small or debut authors will put their first book on the kindle for free.

I typically get free books on there to read before bed or if I am in a reading slump. Don’t get me wrong, you will most likely have to through a ton of horribly written books. Though you can always find some really good books in there. I always love going through and picking books. I mean I even get enjoyment out of the horribly written and cheesy novels that you can find under the free section.

So for this post I am going to share with you some of my favorites that I have read in the past! I will provide the links for all of them down below. Though I can’t guarantee that they are still free because I got these 3-7 years ago.

  1. Wings by Aprilynne Pike

My sister got this book a very long time ago, if I had to guess I would say it was 7 or 8 years ago. She read it then convinced me to read it because it seemed right up my alley. This was at the beginning of my kindle days, back when I actually paid kindle books. So I assumed because it was free that it probably wouldn’t be very good. But was I wrong!

This book is about a girl named Laurel who up until now (I think she is going into 10th grade) had been home schooled. She gets to the high school, which is a totally new experience for her, and right away meets a boy named David that befriends her. Her and David pretty much become best friends that spend all their time together. Just when she though life couldn’t get any better the horrible happens! She feels on her back what appears to be her first zit. Can I just say I wish I could have been 16 not having any acne, that’s the dream. Though everyday it seems to keep growing and starts to freak her out, she begins to think maybe she has a tumor or an abnormal growth. Then she wakes up to find that the ball is no longer her biggest problem, she now has giant flower petals growing out of her!

I though that this book had such an interesting take on fairies and I would definitely give it a read if you love fantasy like I do. I mean it is no Sarah J Maas book, but I thought that it was good enough that I have reread it a couple times.

  1. Dark Promise by Talia Jager and Julia Crane

I got this book a couple of years ago when I was hunting through the top 100 free section of the kindle books. I knew from the cover that it would be about fairies because the girl on the cover had wings. That was enough to pull me in!

This book is about Rylie, who is your average teenage girl who is dating the baseball player and has a best friend. She is just ready to be turning 16, until a stranger comes knocking at her door. The blonde at the door tells her that she is her birth mother. Rylie thinks she is crazy because she was not adopted. This lady goes on to tell her that she switch her at birth with her parents real child, that actually died. She reveals that Rylie is going to be turning into a fairy in the morning and that the reason she switched her is that the Dark fae king wants her.

This book really surprised me. By the description and cover art I was expecting it to not be a very good book. I enjoyed reading the series. The only one that really disappointed me was the last book, I just didn’t like it as much as the others. I would suggest this for anyone who likes books on fairies or changelings.

  1. How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire by Kerrelyn Sparks

I know what you’re thinking, what the heck kind of book is this girl suggesting for us? Fret not! I have your best interests in mind 🙂 I found this book and thought that the cover and name sounded funny and thought why not!

This book is about a vampire named Roman Draganesti who sinks his fangs into a science project and gets one of his fangs taken out. He needs to get to a dentist immediately to get it reattached. He gets to the only available and close night dentist. This is where he find Shannon, who little to his knowledge is in the witness protection program for witnessing a Russian mob murder and testifying. While trying to work on Roman, the Russians find Shannon. Luckily Roman is a very skilled vampire and he is able to get her out without getting injured. Roman brings Shannon to his home so that she can be under his protection until the Russian situation is under control. While she is staying there they both begin to develop feelings for each other.

By the cover and the name I was expecting this to be a horrible book to just read at night. I was pleasantly surprised that was a real plot. Another thing I enjoyed was that Roman was a scientist and there were certain science facts that were throughout the book. If you are like me and love anything vampire then I would suggest reading this book!

Of Poseidon Review

Author: Anna Banks

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance

Cover Rating: 2.5

**notice: From now on I won’t be posting an actual rating of the books I read. Personally it is very hard for me to give a straight rating because so many factors go into why I like or don’t like books. Another reason is if I was an author I would get a little sad if someone gave me a bad rating. So from now on I will just point out what I like and what I don’t like. Though I have decided I will post a rating of what I think of covers. If any authors see these ratings, it has nothing to do with you. It actually takes a lot to wow me on a cover.

Amazon Summary:

Galen, a Syrena prince, searches land for a girl he’s heard can communicate with fish. It’s while Emma is on vacation at the beach that she meets Galen. Although their connection is immediate and powerful, Galen’s not fully convinced that Emma’s the one he’s been looking for. That is, until a deadly encounter with a shark proves that Emma and her Gift may be the only thing that can save his kingdom. He needs her help–no matter what the risk.

Spoiler Free Review:

Recently I have been getting into mermaid books because they intrigue me. The thing that I like about them is that they are constantly changing. By changing I mean that facts about them are different from book to book. In one book a mermaids kiss will turn you and the next there is no way to become one. These little details help define what a good mermaid book is to me.

One thing that I really like about the book was that there were multiple perspectives throughout the novel. I always think that it really helps guide a reader though actually getting to know the characters on a deeper level. It is sometimes hard to gauge a book based on just one point of view from one character. That is why I typically don’t like books that are in third person because I don’t think you can really understand a book very well.

If you like mermaids, romance, and mystery I would suggest this book for you. It is honestly one of my favorite mermaid books that I have read. It has a certain aspect in it that I have never read in another novel that I have never seen in another book before and it really pulled me in. Romance comes into play with the two main characters. Then mystery connects with the reason that pulled me into this book.

SPOILERS AHEAD:

The book starts off with Emma and her best friend Chloe. Emma literally runs into Galen on the board walk. At this point you think well she literally ran into this hot guy we all know what that means, love interest! Then the friends notice that this hottie has the same intriguing eye color that Emma has. Galen and his twin separate from them because they decide they are going to go surfing.

Things take a very surprising turn that I was definitely not expecting. They are on their surfboards and a shark comes up and takes hold of her leg, the suspense! At this point Galen jumps into the water because he noticed the shark coming. He turns invisible so Emma can’t see her since she jumps into the water to help Chloe. Though Emma tells the shark to stop and it does. At this point I was thinking whawhawhatttt because I have never seen this type of thing in any mermaid book that I have read. Galen is stunned because he sees her talk to the shark, something he has never seen any human ever do. Even though Emma got the shark to leave Chloe she ends up dying.

After that Galen talks to her sister about Emma possibly being Syrena (mermaid), but she says it’s not possible since she is blonde. All Syrena are dark skin and dark hair with the weird eyes. Even after their talk Galen has a feeling that he needs to get some answer. He decides to follow her back to her home and enroll in her school to discover how she has their eyes and could control the shark.

Emma is set into a depression because her best friend who was her whole world dies. She shows up to school and is sticking to herself when she runs into Galen and is shocked to find him there. I mean what are the actual odds that the hot guy that you met across the country shows up to your school. I am guessing not very good in my opinion.

After some deduction Galen comes to the conclusion that the only option is that Emma is a Syrena. He tells her what she is and she is shocked. I mean if someone told me I was a mermaid I wouldn’t believe it without some proof either. After some persuasion he finally convinces her what he is.

Emma begins trying to practice and hopefully push herself to the point where her body will change. They are now spending everyday together working up the amount she can stay underwater, increasing it everyday. Sure beats my one minute that I can hold my breath. Since they are always together her mother seems to think they are dating and they go along with it since she won’t be convinced otherwise. While Galen talks to her mother he looks at her, hoping to notice if she looks Syrena, but she has regular colored eyes. Everything else about her mother looks Syrena, but the fact that she doesn’t have the eyes that they have.

Galen gets Emma to talk to sea animals again and he then tells her about how she has this gift. It is called the gift of poseidon. This gift is very rare and allows you to speak to any sea animals. Seems like a pretty cool gift if you ask me. It is very mysterious that she has this gift because you have to from a certain type of Syrena. Galen is from Triton and she would be from Poseidon, it is very odd how she was born though. The most recent person that would be a candidate is the princess from poseidon, but she supposedly died awhile ago in a mine when she was promised to be married to Galen’s brother.

Galen and Emma take a trip to the doctor that Galen trusts and lets run tests on him. While there Emma gets some tests done on her to hopefully get some more answers. The doctor comes to the conclusion that Emma is half Syrena. He figures this out because the reason Syrena live so long is that they have a slower heart rate than humans that makes them age slower. She has a heart rate in between a human and Syrena.

They get home and Emma decides to confront her mom. Galen says that she is the missing princess. He discovered that when a Syrena is on land for a prolonged amount of time their eyes change to a more normal color. This is how her mom looked Syrena, but with a normal hair color. Her mom then ties everyone up and drugs them so she can take Emma and go on the run.

Last Thoughts?

I finished this and my mind was a bit blown. Throughout pretty much the whole book I never could have guessed that her mom was the missing princess. I mean now looking back on it I can see the hints that were there. I think that the author did a very good job of using slight hints, but not giving it away until the very end. This book honestly surprised me, I bought it form book outlet for a couple dollars not expecting much. The author included a good amount of fantasy, romance, and mystery without having too much.

I really liked the half mermaid aspect because I had never read anything like that before. In every other book that I have read they are always a full mermaid, even if they didn’t know they were a mermaid. So I thought that it was very inventive of the author to not only think of this, but also use medical aspects how she is different from both humans and mermaids. Overall I think this was a great book and I would read it again.

**Side note: I finished the whole series in less than a week!

Hope you liked this. Let me know what you think in the comments!!

From your local bibliophile, see you next time 🙂

Hello!

I am Mikayla. I am 21 and have a deep love for young adult literature. On my average day, when I am not working, I have my nose in my most recent novel. I am also an avid watcher of many booktubes. I graduated with a bachelor’s in english literature. English classes in University are typically a tad boring because you are being forced to read books outside of your genre. My favorite class was young adult literature, I took it because I typically read that genre. Once I finished with the class I finally realized that young adult literature was my true passion and I wanted to do something with it. It took me awhile, but I thought a blog would be the best way to meet people who feel the way I do and will share the same as me about these books.
My passion for books began when I was 12 years old. I had an english teacher, if I remember correctly her name was Ms. Martin. Up until this point I had loathed reading. Looking back I think it was because I was forced to start reading and up until then hadn’t found that perfect book that made me fall in love with books. This english teacher was determined to find a book that would get me to read. One day she gave me Don’t You Dare Read This, Mrs. Dunphrey, this book got me interested in reading, but I wasn’t totally in love yet. Then a month or two later the movie Twilight, as you all know it was based on the famous book. After watching it I fell in love with the story. This inspired to me to go to the nearest bookstore and purchase the book. I proceeded to read the book over the next week. Once I finished it I went on to the next and the next. I had finally discovered that I actually loved books. SO that is how I came to be the avid reader that I am today.
I made this blog because none of my friends and family share the same passion as I do. Some like books, but usually not the ones I do or the extent that I do. For awhile now I have wanted to get into the online book community. My dream is to find people from this blog and others that share my passion for the same books. I plan to write a post after every book I read and maybe some others! Most of the books I read are young adult literature, but I will read others that are science fiction, fantasy, and romance.
I am excited to be apart of this community and I hope you enjoy!
